Melvin's Books

"These selections focus on the science of the NDE and developing a skeptic's perspective."

Life at Death: Dr. Kenneth Ring

Ken Ring is one of the early near-death researchers and his work has never been equaled.  This book is one of the clearest and best documented explanations of what exactly is a near-death experience.

Heading Towards Omega: In Search of the Meaning of the Near-Death Experience: Dr. Kenneth Ring

Ken Ring's work landmark work on the meaning of the NDE which has not been equaled.  We are only now starting to understand and catch up with the work that Ken Ring did thirty years ago.

Where God Lives: Paranormal Science and How Our Brains are connected to the Universe

Yes, one of my own books is my favorite book in this field.  This is the only book of which I am aware in which the neuroscience of the near-death experience is clearly explained.  We cannot understand the spirituality of the NDE until we understand the science behind it.

Irreducible Mind: Toward a Psychology for the 21st Century:  Edward Kelly (editor)

An astonishing encyclopedic presentation of current cutting-edge thinking on consciousness from scientists and psychiatrists.  Just the reference list alone is essential.  This book is for scholars, dense and otherwise unreadable.

On the Other Side of Life: Evelyn Valerino

Dr. Valerino presents both the neuroscientific and theological perspective on near death experiences.

Otherworld Journeys: Carol Zalesky

Harvard-trained religion scholar Carol Zalesky presents a historical perspective on NDEs with a comparison of medieval and modern near death experiences.

Dying to Live: Susan Blackmore

Dr. Blackmore is the best and most articulate of the skeptics of near-death experiences.  This is an important book to read to round out one's understanding of the experience from someone who doesn't conclude that these experiences are real.  A thoughtful skeptical viewpoint is essential to truly understand the near-death experience.
